Social Insights: 10 online tools you should be using to build your network

September 12, 2013

online networking tools

The most important part of building a strong network is the development of genuine relationships. That means getting to know people and giving (at least) as good as you get. Tech tools shouldn’t be viewed as a magic bullet that replaces those relationship building efforts, but as a means to enhance and support them. You’re very likely aware of, if not actively using Facebook,Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and Pinterest, so I’ve created a list of 10 lesser known online tools to help build and support your online reputation and relationships.

Social Insights: What’s so important about personal branding?

June 20, 2013

Key to Career Success

Prior to starting nSiteSocial, I was the social media manager for a corporation in the recruiting and staffing industry and had the privilege of getting a glimpse into what hiring managers and recruiters are really doing to fill open positions. I hope you’ll take a moment to read through this post even if you’re not actively seeking new employment. My experience has shown me that any of us can suddenly find ourselves thrust into the job market, and we need to be prepared.

If you haven’t considered your online reputation in terms of the impact that it can have on your career, the time to start is right now. The days of submitting a carefully crafted resume with the assumption that prospective employers will not dig deeper are over. Not only are prospective employers Googling candidates who have contacted them, they are also proactively recruiting based on social media search results. Many employers believe that the ideal candidate it is a passive candidate – meaning they are employed elsewhere and not actively seeking new employment.  That being the case, the most desirable recruits will be included in keyword searches because of blog posts, articles and status updates they have posted publicly that are relevant to their careers.

And – for better or worse – we all need to think of ourselves as potential job seekers. The idea of job security being offered by a single employer is painfully outdated. The best security is in being sought after in your industry. Click here for specific steps to establish and enhance your personal brand.

So what good is a Rotary meeting anyway?

February 21, 2013

keep calm and hugI have been a Rotarian since 2004 as a member of Frisco Sunrise Rotary.  My father is an active Rotarian in Lawrence, KS and my grandfather was also a Rotarian.  My father-in-law and his father were also Rotarians.

Why?  To be a Rotarian you need to attend your club’s weekly meetings. Who has time for a commitment like that?  An hour a week spent listening to area speakers and learning about what the club can do to better influence the lives of others—there is just no time for that!

Well, my Rotary meeting the other day was one of those meetings that reminded me of why I am proud to be a Rotarian!  Mark Hundley from Journey of Hope Grief Support Center was our speaker and delivered a powerful message on an uncomfortable topic. Please visit their site here and learn more about this local resource whose mission is to assist all of us through difficult times. I came away with the goal to say better goodbyes to my family and friends – making sure to give them an extra hug and kiss, never knowing if it might be our last.  Arms out…. I’m coming in for a hug! Be ready!
