Frisco City Council Takes Great Steps!

January 26, 2009

Here was the verbiage for last weeks agenda item at the Frisco City Council Meeting:  Consider and Act upon the approval of an extension to the Management Agreement between the City of Frisco, the Collin County Community College District and the Superdrome Management Group for the maintenance and operations of the Frisco Superdrome. (Parks and Rec)

And it passes without issue!

What this item is, was two fold; 1. To allow the Superdrome Management Group (SMG) to continue to run the day to day operations of the Superdrome and receive a monthly allowance of $6,667 from the Superdrome Enterprise Fund (SEF) that was established in 1999.  2. Have SMG receive a one time payment from SEF of $98,100 for a complete resurfacing of the Frisco Superdrome!

The Council did offer one challenge to the SMG- continue to gain sponsors that can help keep the track financially stable and SMG agreed.  Scroll down to item 25 and you can watch that section of the council meeting!

How this connects back to the Frisco Cycling Club.  At a track race that Tom Ernst from Richardson Bike Mart held- we as a club decided to host an open house.  We invited City officials and sponsors to the track.  We also provided food and drinks for all who joined us.  We had several sponsors join us as well as George Purefoy, Frisco City Manager and Tony Felker, Frisco City Councilman and newly appointed President of the Frisco Chamber of Commerce.  They both have been around since the track got its start and the conversations kept coming back to the look of the boards.  When you see photos of the track when new, those boards were beautiful- but over time they weather and fade.  So, we started meeting with a group of City officials via the club and got a great conversation going and then handed it back to the SMG.  Many thanks to club members; Joe Crenshaw, Tim Knowles and Joe Foos for taking the time and energy to attend and prepare for those meetings.

The City understand that our club is one of many disciplines but one that wants to be involved and is willing to take time out of the day to work.  Let’s keep that up in 2009 and for the future- never let this spirit and partnership with the greatest City in Texas fade.

A Doctor Walks Into a Bicycle Store

October 20, 2008

Sure, sounds like the start of a great joke but that really happened this weekend!   My doc had been reading this Weekly with me talking bike this and bike that and his family had been on his case to upgrade their bikes so this was the weekend.  It is still unclear of the total dollar amount spent at Richardson BikeMart as he went back a 2nd time for a bike for himself- after a consultation with his local bicycle geek (me).  Now is the time folks- best weeks to ride a bicycle in Midwest is now- with the leaves starting to change and the weather the way it is, get out and ride!  (then send an e-mail to your local officials asking them to do the same as well as adding more resources and funds to Cities bicycle and transportation departments.)

Tom Ernst did it again!

October 6, 2008

What a great event and an awesome turnout we had at the Frisco Superdrome the other night!  Tom Ernst from Richardson BikeMart (RBM) successfully promoted his 2nd track event at the Superdrome.  As a draw to have “fans in the stands” he stuffed 150 RBM bottles with giveaways from local companies.  After the bottles were all given away, Frisco Cycling Club (FCC) member Drew DeMoss counted the stands at around 200 in attendance!  One of our sponsors of the FCC, Dr. Bullitt made it to the event with his kids, thanks for joining us.  Also, a thank you to Frisco City Manager, George Purefoy and Frisco City Councilman, Tony Felker for joining us at the races.  I took a call from Councilman and FCC member Scott Johnson and he was not ready to be on his feet that long after his recent back surgery- heal up Scott- I was serious about getting a City Staff/City Council track class going soon!).   Please stop in to RBM Frisco and thank Tom for his work on this event!
