HOW TO COMMUNICATE….

December 7, 2009

When I first began doing this newsletter it was sent as a pdf file by email. As more software was developed I found a company named constant contact, a pioneer in mass communications. It is a very affordable system that enables me to create the newsletter in a well laid-out, professional looking format. It is also convenient that I am able to use it for mailings, etc. for other groups to which I belong – Frisco Sunrise Rotary, Frisco Cycling Club and various church groups. Perhaps most important, it is designed to be used by an unskilled user like myself. If you are interested in using Constant Contact just let me know and I will send you an introduction email from Constant Contact which offers you a $30 credit as a new user. (I am also offered a $30 credit for the referral.)

As you have also seen over the last few years- this system allows Julie and I to replace the normal printing and mailing of Christmas Cards.  Our Christmas list that has grown to over 700 names, that is a lot of envelops to lick, yuck.

My son, Luke’s, soccer coach owns a company named call-em-all which calls out multiple phone numbers at the same time or send out multiple emails at the same time or even multiple texts with the stroke of a key. For instance, he set up the phone numbers of all the soccer team members and makes only one phone call and it goes to everyone on the list. It would be very handy for my Frisco Cycling Club should there be a change in plans for a ride or an event.  But even more important- it would be a great service for all my political friends who might be planning their re election.  Always good to use a local company when you can!

So how have you used technology to stay connected?

Who was this Paul Harris Guy?

September 14, 2009

How about the founder of Rotary in Chicago, IL on February 23, 1905.

Mr. Harris was a young attorney, new to the area and anxious to connect and become more involved with the community. He, along with three other men, founded the Rotary Club of Chicago in 1905. The first meetings of the new group rotated between the offices of the four founders – thus the name Rotary and the wheel logo. When the membership grew too large for their offices, the meetings moved to a restaurant, very much like Randy’s Steakhouse where my Frisco Sunrise Club meets at today.

The organization that he began over 100 years ago is dear to my heart and I am proud to be called a Rotarian.  It is also a special club for me as my grandfather was a Rotarian, my father is a Rotarian as are my father-in-law and grandfather-in-law.  A nice long family history. I hope my children will also enjoy the camaraderie and community involvement it has provided me.

So now we know about Paul Harris, but what is a Paul Harris Fellow?  Anyone who contributes or in whose name is contributed a gift of $1,000 or more to the Annual Programs Fund of Rotary may become a Paul Harris Fellow. Each new Paul Harris Fellow receives a commemorative certificate, a Paul Harris Fellow pin, and a medallion.  And a month ago I became a Paul Harris Fellow.  My friend and fellow club member has given generously over the years and he shared his points with me and a few others, giving us this high distinction in the club.  I will be forever in his debt and hope that over my years of service I, too, can give this gift to a member in the future.

John works for the City of Frisco and we are lucky to have him on staff – truly one of the good guys!  Been hard for me to make Rotary since the twins have been born but the hope is I can make this meeting to hear John talk.
