Yesterday, my oldest son and I volunteered to help a new youth triathlon club, named FASTT Tri Club. They were having a skills day and asked if members of the Frisco Cycling Club (FCC) could volunteer to help. As we watched the riders go around and around the marked course it became clear what separated many of the riders was not just strength and ability, but the bike they were riding.
Trust me, I know all about the cost of bicycles. I also know that many of us won’t consider buying a bike from a bike store until we feel our children are old enough to appreciate it. The challenge is with large big box retail store bikes is most of us don’t know much about them-who put it together, how much does it weigh, how long will the brakes last, will it be easy to peddle, etc.
As an avid cyclist, I really encourage parents to weigh the risk vs. reward when purchasing a bike from a local store versus a big box chain. The local store has a vested interest in ensuring you have a quality bike, where as a chain doesn’t hinge its entire reputation on whether or not your bike falls apart. A great way to get quality at a lower price is to buy a used bike from your local bike store. You get a certified bike that you know won’t fall apart when your kid is on it, at a retail chain price. As an added bonus, if you buy from a bike store, you have the option of selling back the bike later and can use the credit to buy your kid’s next one. I just bought one for us and it’s perfect for my 5-year old son who I want to have a safe bike without spending a fortune. Just a thought….

Frisco Needs Safe Passing for Vulnerable Road Users. In June 2009 SB 488, the “Safe Passing” bill that would have created a safe zone of three feet around vulnerable road users (including pedestrians, runners, motorcyclists, cyclists, workers and more), was passed in the state of Texas. Similar laws have been passed in many other states including Arizona, Utah, Oklahoma, Colorado and Florida.
“However, the
Frisco Cycling Club received an alert concerning the bill on the day that it was to have been signed into law by Governor Perry that he was going to veto it. We immediately went on the offensive and alerted our members and friends to email or call his office and let him know how important this bill was to many Texans,” said Geoffrey Davis, president of Frisco Cycling Club.

One more photo from the Lance Armstrong ride a few weeks ago, me and Jeff Ellis near the end.
Below is a write up about the bicycle ride I did a few weeks ago in Austin written by my friend and fellow Frisco Cycling Club member, Jell Ellis:
It’s been a little over a week now since the Frisco Cycling Club participated in the Austin LiveStrong Challenge and what an awesome event it was. Geoff Davis, Jeff Ellis, Jason Hatfield, Shanna Ellis, Matt Ellis, Kristina Syverson and Kyle York all joined in for the FCC Team. Collectively the Team raised $3,335 in support of the Lance Armstrong Foundation which works to fight the ongoing battle with Cancer. This years ride began and ended in Dripping Springs, Texas which is located just West of Austin. Routes of varying lengths wound through the beautiful Texas Hill Country strolling through countryside that we just are used to seeing in our own area. The scenery alone is well worth the trip! Many thanks to those who participated as this is a very worthy cause and one in which our club will become more active in the future.
This year over 3,800 riders helped to raise nearly $10 million for the fight against Cancer. In addition, all of the bikes ridden by Lance himself this year were auctioned during the weekend festivities. This includes his Tour de France machines as well as the bike he rode in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. Collectively the bikes raised $1.3 million dollars. Wow! Those are some expensive bikes.
For those who may not be familiar with LAF, The Lance Armstrong Foundation unites people to fight cancer, believing that unity is strength, knowledge is power, and attitude is everything. Through the dollars and awareness that we raise, we can inspire and empower individuals, and we can make life better for the millions of people across the globe fighting cancer today. The LAF not only works tirelessly to help fund the efforts to find a cure for Cancer and create a global awareness for how drastic and widespread the Cancer disease really is but the organization also goes to great lengths to help those who may find themselves currently in the fight with Cancer. Whether you’re a Patient, a Caregiver, Family member or any of the other countless ways you can be affected by Cancer the LAF is available to help. They have a tremendous support and educational network that is designed to help people cope with the situation by creating an understanding of how to most effectively battle Cancer.
Look for The FCC Team next year as well. We plan to have an even bigger Team in 2010 for the Austin event and raise even more money for LAF. So mark your calendar for the third weekend in October and join us in Austin.

I rode my bicycle with Lance Armstrong this weekend, and many of you helped me do that. This past weekend was the LiveStrong Challenge in Austin, TX that many of you graciously donated towards the
team we put together to ride the event. Seven of us from the
Frisco Cycling Club (FCC) raised $3310 and rode for our teammate’s brother as he lost his fight to cancer 2 years ago. Our teammate is Jeff Ellis and he, I and a few others were the driver behind getting the FCC to where it is today- a community focused cycling club that has a larger goal than just riding a bike. Jeff’s brother Tom was diagnosed with cancer but did not let that slow him down and he and Jeff road many miles and events together. I was proud to be part of this group and can’t wait for next year, maybe you will join the club and ride with us?

Over the weekend we had an awesome event for the
Frisco Cycling Club (FCC). A day at Frisco Fire Safety Town. If you have not been there yet you
need to click here, find their hours and take your kids over. Also they will have a large trick or treat event on October 23rd from 6-9, a free event for the City of Frisco.

Here are some notes from my friend and Frisco City Councilman’s day on the bike. He made me a promise to be in a Frisco jersey the next time he rides a bike. I have some cycling friends (you know who you are Geoffrey Davis and Bill Woodward) who have been trying to get me out to join them in the Frisco Cycling Club. Problem is, I only ride a bike around the neighborhood with my kids and probably have never gone further than a few miles. I was invited to represent Frisco in the Make-A-Wish 100 wish Bike Ride (Maher Maso was out of town….how convenient!). This was a first year event to raise money to grant 100 wishes and over 1,000 cyclists turned out. They had mapped out a 10 mile course for myself and Plano Mayor Phil Dyer and McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller. Members of the Legacy Riders club rode with us for encouragement. After the 10 mile marke, my rider coaches challenged me to make the 30 mile mark. The last mile felt like it was straight uphill but well worth the struggle. It was a great event and I hope it can kickstart me to finally join the Frisco Cycling Club on some rides!
