How are You Saving the World?

March 22, 2010

Recently, we made a global change at the Davis household and began composting.  We went online to a company called CleanAirGardening.com, which is owned by a friend. With his advice and his online tutorial, we selected a compost bin as well as a counter-top canister for all of our table scraps.

The boys are elated.  They cannot believe all the fun it is to take things from their plate that are on the approved list and place them into the silver canister.  The other day my five-year-old asked me to put the canister lower so that they could reach it without my help. My answer?  Not on your life! Supervision is definitely required with a 5 and 3 year old!

We have many rabbits (and possibly other varmints) in our area in Frisco, so we’re taking care that we don’t save the food scraps that would attract varmints to our bin. The bin we purchased does have rodent screens which are a big plus.

How are you saving the world?

Here in Frisco we have a great system through Community Waste Disposal with large blue recycling trash cans. When I first moved to Frisco, we had small, green buckets that were kept in the garage and then set out on trash day, but they’ve been replaced with these large blue recycling bins. They can take almost everything.  Anything they don’t take you save in your garage and take down to the City of Frisco on ‘Chunk Your Junk’ days. There is an approved list of items that they will accept; those things that are unacceptable can be taken to the dump.

We have been recycling so well that we asked for a second blue canister. I would encourage you to look at the top of your recycling container if you live here in Frisco.  Familiarize yourself with all the different items to make it easier on our life.  We are teaching the children in our house to put any items that are recyclable in a ‘recycling spot’ on the bar. They will then be put outside in the container. We keep a plastic bin in the garage for easy collection of recyclables so that we don’t always have to be walking outside to the larger container.

I hope you’re doing things in your world that are helping to reuse, recycle, I guess that’s like the song goes in the Curious George movie.  Reduce, reuse, recycle.  Thanks for reading.

Lochrann’s Paddy Dash

March 15, 2010

Lochrann’s Paddy Dash- Huge success!  Were you part of the 384 entrants for this year’s event promoted by Frisco Sunrise Rotary?  Our run last year was cold, misty and 170 brave souls came out to join us- so with temps in the 60′s- we were glad to see so many of you come out to join us.  Results are posted on the site- how did you do?  I saw a good amount of City leaders on hand; Frisco Mayor Maso, Councilman Jeff Cheney and Patrick Fallon, Jill Cumnock from Frisco Family Services Center and local icon- Randy Creech ran the 5k!  Hours of volunteer time was spent on this event and it would not have happened without the support of our great sponsors!  I hope you will join us in 2011- as a runner, walker or a sponsor- we can use you!

I’ve got some great doctors

December 14, 2009

When we moved to Frisco I began attending the Frisco Chamber of Commerce networking meetings in order to establish myself as a businessman in our new community and also to meet other business people. Now that I am established in my own business I continue to attend the meetings to meet the new business people coming into the Frisco area. Frisco is like the old Gold Rush towns with new people arriving almost daily and I want to become acquainted with as many as possible.

One of the people with whom I became acquainted when we first arrived in 2002 is my Chiropractor, Dr. Brian Bullitt. He has become a good friend and is also one of the main sponsors of the Frisco Cycling Club. It is great to have him involved. I was also fortunate enough to meet Dr. Pedro Checo who has become my primary doctor. He has a great sense of humor, a great office staff who ensure that his schedule runs on time and is very direct which I appreciate. Dr. Chekko and I have a true bond in our love of Free State Brewery in Lawrence, Kansas. We have a mutual friend who has taken him to Lawrence and introduced him to Free State and we both have a great appreciation of their products!

Through Dr. Checo I was introduced to Dr. Gupta when I was in the market for lasik eye surgery. I would highly recommend Dr. Gupta as a caring and responsive doctor. He charges no more than any of the other doctors who perform this surgery and was always available to me both before and after my surgery. I would highly recommend him.

Recently Julie insisted that I go to a dermatologist to have some spots examined so I made an appointment with Dr. Michael McGuiness. From the beginning his staff was very pleasant and organized. Although I have been to a dermatologist before, I had never been to one where they did a full-body scan. It was very cool. Since I have spent a great deal of time in the sun while bicycling Dr. McGuiness talked with me about preventative measures I needed to take on a regular basis. I was genuinely impressed with his demeanor and his approach. So, if for any reason you have a need for a dermatologist, I would highly recommend Dr. McGuiness.
