Armstrong Invests In Honey Stinger

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO (BRAIN)—Lance Armstrong has joined the ownership team of Honey Stinger, the manufacturer of honey-based nutritional foods. As part of the relationship, Armstrong will contribute to future product development and endorse Honey Stinger energy gels, bars and organic chews.

“The whole thing has taken on larger-than-life proportions. It means great things for the brand,” said Len Zanni, Honey Stinger’s marketing director. “He’s a good guy who likes our products and we’re inspired to have him on board and have him be part of the team. It’s a testament to our current product line, our company, and the state of the natural foods industry—if he didn’t see some promise I don’t think he would have been interested,” Zanni said yesterday, en route home from meetings related to the deal in Austin, Texas, the home of the seven-time Tour de France champion.

“I first tried Honey Stinger products during a mountain bike race in Colorado,” said Armstrong. “I was impressed with the great taste and energy they provided. Honey Stinger works for me in training and racing because you want to eat them and they work. I like the whole team—they understand what athletes need and they’re great to work with. I’m excited to be part of the Stinger team and work with them on expanding the products and business.

Armstrong met Zanni when they teamed up to race the 12 Hours of Snowmass mountain bike race outside Aspen in 2008. The foundation for a new business partnership was hatched over long bike rides and get-togethers with company leaders.

“It really came about organically over the course of several rides. I’d been riding with him on and off when he’d come to Aspen, and he’d always ask about Honey Stinger. Things progressed from there,” Zanni said, adding that Honey Stinger’s sponsorship of the Trek Livestrong Under 23 Cycling Team also helped foster the relationship.

Armstrong has taken a stake in other bike and nutrition companies in the past. He became part-owner in New Sun Nutrition, the maker of FRS, in 2007 and invested in SRAM in September 2008 for an unspecified amount. Zanni declined to disclose Armstrong’s ownership stake in Honey Stinger, saying only that he joins its current ownership team consisting of the four company founders.

Bill Gamber, an athlete/entrepreneur, teamed up with his father William, a honey industry veteran, Bob Stahl, a food product developer, and John Miller, a professional beekeeper, to found Honey Stinger in 2002. Today, the Steamboat Springs-based company produces over 20 honey-based energy products that are distributed internationally at specialty sporting goods retailers and natural food grocers.

There is much misunderstood about Section 8 and how it relates to Frisco.  The City of Frisco does not vote on Section 8 housing. Frisco’s vote was to issue a letter of support for the developments if they build to our building standards.  Just like any development, we are required by law to approve plats if the plat complies with city codes and applicable law.  In addition, a current development may choose to accept Section 8 vouchers without the consent of the City of Frisco.  There are currently two developments in Frisco that accept Section 8 housing vouchers.  One development has no outstanding vouchers and the other has 12.

What we do have control over is to attempt to comply with the Federal Housing Act and other applicable statutes to assure the city does not incur needless and expensive lawsuits that could cost the city millions of dollars (and end up with housing that is unacceptable). By being proactive, Frisco was able to maintain control of our building standards, as well as other favorable terms, which have much more far reaching consequences than just low income housing.

While we feel confident Frisco does not have any discriminatory practices in our building standards or policies, we hired the leading attorney on this issue and based on their advice, as well as our city attorney, we were well educated on all possible pitfalls to any stance we may take as a city. Conversely, other cities have chosen not to be proactive and have had requirements forced upon them.  For instance, the City of McKinney chose to take the passive route and is currently negotiating a settlement that has far less agreeable terms and also cost their tax payers thousands of dollars in attorney fees as well as attorney fees they had to agree to pay on behalf of ICP.  In addition, the city of Sunnyvale lost their fight in federal court and has been the recipient of federal mandates regarding low income housing, including requirements for Section 8 housing as well as being enjoined from enforcing their building codes.    Protecting Frisco’s building standards was the most important decision in this process and the highest protection we have to ensuring quality development.

This is currently a three year contract. Year one has come and gone with no projects submitted. We are now in year two and there were two projects which applied for grants.  Only one of the two is currently proceeding through the process. There are funds available for approximately the top 7 projects.  The Frisco project ranks #27 out of 28 competing projects for grant funds making it unlikely to be awarded. If the project was awarded grant money, then at that point the normal approval process would begin including public hearings, staff reviews, Planning & Zoning reviews, and ultimately Council reviews.

If anyone would like even more detailed information regarding this issue please feel free to email me at jcheney@friscotexas.gov or call me direct at 214-707-7320.

Sincerely,

Jeff Cheney

Three attorneys, the City Staff, five City Council members, and the Mayor approved signing a letter to the State of Texas stating that the city would not oppose a developer applying to the State for Low-income housing federal tax credits. (By the way, this is the same Staff and Attorney that has guided this great City over the last two decades).

The US Constitution protects landowners right to sell his property to whomever he wishes.  The same document protects a willing buyer’s rights to buy property.  The City can only control where multi-family buildings can go, and dictate the quality through the Building Codes.  After that- the City is very limited on what it can and cannot do.  Otherwise, this is the Soviet Union and not the USA.

Therefore, Mr. Cheney and I did what we always endeavor to do – make Frisco the best place in the world to live, work and play.  We are both still very much fiscally conservative and pro law enforcement.  Safety for our citizens will always be first for us.  Building quality and quality of life here in Frisco has not changed, and Mr Cheney and I will always make sure that continues.

Denver Launches Bike Sharing Program

Denver Launches Bike Sharing Program

DENVER, CO (BRAIN)—B-cycle is helping Denver residents increase daily activity and reduce carbon emissions with the country’s first citywide bike-sharing system, Denver B-cycle, that launches today.

The program will launch with 500 B-cycles at 50 B-stations around the city, offering a green alternative to cars for short commutes and errands.

"Denver residents embrace healthy and sustainable living, so it’s natural that Denver is now home to the first large-scale bike-sharing system in the U.S.," said Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. "We’re confident that Denver can set an example for the whole country and show that bike-sharing is a viable transportation option to help improve the overall health of Americans and reduce our carbon footprint."

B-cycle was formed by a partnership between Humana, Trek Bicycle and Crispin Porter + Bogusky based on a shared belief that bicycles should be a vehicle for positive health and environmental change as well as an important part of a community’s transportation ecosystem. Together, the founding partners developed a bike-sharing system designed specifically for U.S. cities, universities and corporate campuses. Denver is B-cycle’s first installation.

The B-cycle bikes are equipped with computers to track mileage, calories burned and carbon offsets. Riders can monitor their personal fitness, see their contributions to the city’s green efforts and connect with others online at www.Bcycle.com (click on link). To check out bikes, residents and tourists can register on the B-cycle Web site or at B-stations throughout Denver. The program will be managed by the newly formed nonprofit Denver Bike Sharing.

"Bike-sharing was created for the commuter whose transit stop is two miles from the office, the urbanite running errands, and the tourist out sightseeing," said Bob Burns, president of B-cycle and general counsel for Trek Bicycle Corporation, a B-cycle partner. "With this in mind, B-cycle offers a cruiser-style bike that is comfortable for people of all sizes and biking abilities."

First popularized in European cities such as Paris and Barcelona, bike-sharing is quickly expanding around the world in places like Beijing, Montreal and, most recently, Mexico City. Denver is the first of three U.S. cities to set up bike-sharing programs in 2010, with Minneapolis and Boston planning to install systems in the coming months. Dozens more cities, universities and corporations are considering such programs.

Denver B-cycle marks the return of bike-sharing to Denver after a successful pilot program at the Democratic National Convention in 2008. Humana, a B-cycle partner, teamed up with Denver Mayor Hickenlooper, the 2008 Convention Host Committee, the local bicycling community, and the nonprofit cycling advocacy group Bikes Belong to bring bike-sharing to the national political conventions in Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul. This put bike-sharing on the national stage and grabbed the attention of elected officials and policymakers from around the country–and area residents.

The test programs demonstrated bike-sharing’s viability and put in motion plans for permanent systems in both cities. Humana’s Innovation Center first brought bike-sharing to its Louisville, Ky., headquarters in 2007 to give Humana’s 10,000 associates a healthy transportation alternative. These efforts culminated in the formal expansion of bike sharing through B-cycle.

Jeff Cheney Re-election Campaign Weekly Update (4/20/2010)

April 21, 2010

Re-elect Jeff Cheney for City Council, Place 2

April 21, 2010

Dear Friends,

It has been an exciting week for my re-election campaign.  Let me take a moment to fill you in on what’s been happening on the campaign trail.

Jeff with John and Melanie Classe

Jeff with John & Melanie Classe

I spent some time this week getting to know the residents of Frisco Lakes.  I knocked on many doors, had great conversations, gave out plenty of signs, and hosted a breakfast meet & greet there Friday morning.  John Classe and his wife Melanie hosted a meet & greet on Saturday and then we were off to the Frisco Family Services Salsa Night gala to support a very worthy cause that benefits Frisco families in need.   Every place we went the people were very supportive and in agreement that in these trying times it is more important than ever to ensure the city has the experienced leadership it needs to move their vision forward to the next decade and beyond.

This week, I attended several candidate forums and received questionnaires from many diverse groups.  I was also proud to attend the Police Officers Association event Saturday night.  As you may know, I’ve been a strong supporter of Fire and Police over the years and they have been a tremendous help to me on my campaign.  We couldn’t do it without them!

Election Day is less than 3 weeks away.  We still have a strong need for people to work the polls during early voting and election day.  For those of you who have already expressed interest, my campaign team will be contacting you within the next few days.  If you would like to help out, please let me know by responding to this email and my team will contact you.

One of my primary goals as your city councilman has been transparency.  If there is something you would like to see in a future email, please let me know.  If you have ideas for how we can do better we’d like to know that too.  To demonstrate that transparency, please click the following link to see the candidate questionnaires:   http://choosecheney.com/faq/issues/

As a reminder:

    * Don’t forget to visit our website at http://www.choosecheney.com

    * Please forward this email out to your friends to request their support

    * Early Voting runs 4/26-5/4. Election Day is Saturday, 5/8.

On behalf of my campaign, we would like to thank you again for your help and support.  Now it’s time to kick it into high gear for the final three weeks!

Sincerely,

-Jeff
