Good times amid much controversy.  This was a fun year to watch the Games.  I was also introduced to that great organization, Right To Play during one of the special feature segments that NBC ran.  Had you heard of them?

Hoops in the Square Needs You

August 25, 2008

We are just 1 month away from the 3 on 3 basketball tournament promoted by my Sunrise Frisco Rotary Club.  The event will be held in Frisco Square, i.e. the name, Hoops in the Square.  As you can imagine, an event like this needs the support of the community and its residents, the City and the local corporations.  Because of a scheduling conflict, our volunteer sponsor had to pull themselves out of the event.  That leaves open the opportunity for your company or group to come out and join us that day, September 20th and we return the favor by getting you coverage as a sponsor. Individual volunteers are always welcome but a group may be able to help us as we have a goal of seeing over 30+ volunteers that day- in shifts as you want need to work the whole day.  Please contact me for details.

Kids at Risk

August 25, 2008

I was looking over a flyer I received from Texas Bicycle Coalition.  It was talking about the health of our kids here in TX and am sure the numbers go around this Country.  The numbers came from the Department of Health Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

  • 74% of Texas children do not meet state guidelines for physical education
  • 62% of Texas children do not participate in organized physical activity
  • 35% of Texas school children are overweight or obese
  • 13% of Texas school children walk or bike to school today, compared to 66% in 1975
  • 30% of the average Texas morning rush hour traffic is school related

If you want to become more educated or involved, I put a note below from the TBC website about a meeting this weekend:

Saturday, August 30 at 3 pm
Now you have a great excuse to check out our new and improved office – at the Texas Bicycle Coalition Annual Membership Meeting! It’s the perfect opportunity not only to see the space, but to meet our dedicated staff and board and connect with other cyclists. A reception will follow afterward, so we’ll have the opportunity to catch up with old friends and get acquainted with new ones.

If you can’t make it here in person, you can join the meeting by teleconference.
